Sunchaser console project has taken a turn, as you know these things are wont to do. Anymore, I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything if the project doesn’t throw a few curveballs at me.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Console came out beautifully, which also gave me the excuse to pull out the front portion and undertake a project for which I have been collecting and hoarding parts. But first, it was NASTY under there, so it took a while to clean and vacuum. I recognized some hairs from a dog who is no longer with us, and it made me a little sad. He died of pancreatic cancer at 15, and we adopted Toby in his honor.

My shift boot is a cheap piece of aftermarket shit from the low budget restoration that immediately preceded my ownership. It sat in storage in Sacramento for years before that, which is why I am chasing leaks from dessicated seals. The boot they found had yellow stitching, which was cool, but it is very low quality. Plus, the plastic frame that sits underneath the console and holds the boot in place was broken, with half missing.

But Larry the Sunchaser guy (he runs the owners group on FB and is super nice) sold me the plastic frame, and later I bought one of the replica stock shift boots he had made. I have been holding all of this to find the console.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

These have all disintegrated, so it was cool that Larry had them made. I put the metal frame from the old one inside. I was read my to go.

But lo! It was not to be, because other forces had plans in which I had no say.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

What kind of fastner is that and what should Indo to attach my plastic frame?

Looks like a rivet. If so, drill it out and replace it with another rivet (or a normal screw/nut if there’s access)

I agree, rivet. By no means shy away from being resourceful based on what you have laying around. Chances are it is of better material and done up properly will be appreciated if this is ever dealt with again.

Those rivets aren’t meant to be there, I reckon. Drill them out and replace them with the slide over metal screw retainers that a vehicle of this era would have used before they rusted away...

I’d drill the rivets out and replace with small nuts and bolts if possible. Harder to get on, but would last longer I would think than the rivets. I get nervous using rivets on 25+ year old plastic so I’d try to avoid it if possible.

Btw, that is the biggest gas pedal I’ve ever seen, is it attached to the floor?
